Get Acrylic Painting Supplies

Art supplies vary from one type of painting to another--what might be appropriate for oil painting would only ruin an acrylic painting. Be willing to try out a new medium. Follow these instructions to learn about acrylic painting supplies.

Instructions

1. Purchase a variety of paintbrushes. Commonly used brushes for acrylic painting include a large brush for blending, differently-sized, flat brushes for painting larger areas of canvas, bright brushes for painting and blending smaller areas and round brushes for fine details. Art supply stores carry a wide variety of brushes in both material and price. Synthetic bristled brushes work well with acrylic paints.

2. Find a container to hold water. Use water in acrylic painting to clean brushes and thin paint. No special purchase is necessary for this supply; just recycle an empty whipped topping container or even a plastic cup.

3. Grab a roll of paper towels. Use the towels to blot excess water off brushes or dry them. More economically-priced brands can do the job.

4. Get an easel. Easels come in a variety of sizes and materials. Make sure the easel is large enough to hold the canvas to be painted.

5. Buy pre-stretched canvas, an art world standard. Prices vary widely, so if you're just starting out buying the inexpensive canvas will work just fine. Some canvas comes pre-coated with gesso, so an undercoating is not necessary.

6. Pick up acrylic paints. These paints come in a wide variety of colors. Although different professional artists will give a different list of necessary colors, it is safe to purchase the 3 primary colors, cadmium red, cadmium yellow and ultramarine blue. Titanium white and a black are good choices along with some natural colors such as burnt umber, raw umber, yellow ochre and pthalo green.

7. Obtain something to use as a palette. Anything that will hold paint will do, including a styrofoam plate or a clean pre-packaged microwave dinner dish. Cover it with plastic wrap to keep the paints moist when finished for the day.
